Our story

Signum House is nestled beautifully in Henlow, a village and civil parish in Bedfordshire, which is a beautiful pavilion for young people can lose themselves in, engaging in sports, long walks, and other exciting outdoor activities.
Within a 10-mile radius is a children’s farm, pottery centre, cinema, theatre, indoor soft play, swimming pools, leisure centres, an obstacle training ground, and an archery centre. There are many pathways and walkways nearby, with Baulk Wood just a 7-minute drive away and the beautiful Barton Hills Nature Reserve less than a 20-minute drive away.
This is the safe, warm, welcoming, and nurturing environment we have envisioned to help emotionally and mentally challenged children or those who have lived through traumatic experiences, live a normal life. Through our high quality children’s residential care, we provide a family-like environment which children can truly call “home”.
We love doing this each day because seeing children and young people living normal lives where they enjoy education and knowledge, take up sports, learn new behaviours, and build great relationships with our carers and their peers – motivates us to reach for the highest standards of residential child care.

Our Aim

We aim is to create an environment where children feel safe, cared for, and nurtured. We want them to recover from any past traumas that they have experienced and start living a life where they can achieve their true potential. Our care is second to none and we go out of our way to care for young minds who are unable to live with their own families. We don’t ask questions or judge any child, irrespective of their ethnical, cultural and religious background or their gender.
By providing the highest level of care, we make children and young adults feel safe and valued. This breeds confidence and the essential life skills young people need so direly to become responsible, productive, and successful adults in future.

As we set about helping each child learn their life purpose and narrate their own story, we also develop a sense of self-esteem, self-value, and self-confidence in them, while supporting their unique goals and preparing them for the future. Our main objective is to develop each child from a mental, emotional, physical and psychological standpoint, improving their wellbeing holistically.

Our Ethos

Our Children’s residential care home ethos is one of attachment and trauma informed approaches. We work with a therapeutic parenting approach based on the principles of Dyadic Developmental Practice (DDP).
Dyadic Developmental Parenting (DDP) therapeutic parenting approaches can be beneficial for all children/young people but are especially key in caring for those who have experienced neglect, abuse, significant developmental trauma and disrupted attachments in their early years.
Our friendly carers are trained to look after children and young people with an attitude of Playfulness, Acceptance, Curiosity and Empathy (PACE).

Typical parenting approaches often fail to help these children/ young individuals and, therefore, a more specialised approach encompassing the principles of Playfulness, Acceptance, Curiosity and Empathy (PACE) forms the basis of the care provided at Signum House.
Playfulness brings enjoyment to the relationship. Acceptance creates psychological safety. When we curiously explore within a relationship, we express a desire to know the other more deeply. Empathy communicates our curiosity and acceptance, as we recognise and respond to the other’s emotional experience. This therapeutic parenting approach helps our carers to emotionally connect with the children / young people in ways which increases feelings of safety and security. We recognise that children / young people may fear such a connection at first and we aim to help them overcome these fears in time.
This approach also recognises the impact that trauma has on child development and provides a basis for developing attachment security through consistent and attuned approaches.

Our Mission

Since our inception, we have been on a mission to help young individuals develop the necessary skills as individuals who can later on contribute positively to the larger community. We work tirelessly to prepare them for the future, providing them with a clear path to success.
Our carers at Signum House are exceptionally well-trained and fully certified to provide therapeutic care and teach skills-building to young minds. We provide children and young individuals with the requisite skills they need to live independently, helping them master a variety of skills – from cooking and organising themselves to communication skills, relationship-building, physical fitness, and managing their finances/resources.

We understand all too well that some children have not had a ‘normal’ childhood, and have found it very challenging to deal with specific situations, where they either didn’t have the skills to cope with challenges or were neglected. No matter what the reason, we guarantee a safe, friendly, and nurturing environment where both children and young people can build the necessary skills to transition into a successful and growth-oriented adult life.
We also understand that young people can feel very lonely and isolated when they don’t know how to cope with certain behaviours, especially if they have lived through traumatic experiences in their childhood. Our dedicated 1-on-1 therapy sessions focus on each child self-managing their emotions and building behaviours which transform them into happy, fulfilled, and purposeful individuals.

Our Values

• We value each child’s personal needs, listening to their ideas and preferences, and then consider their emotional as well as behavioural needs.
• We value the importance of open and honest communication at all times, not just with the beloved children and young people we care for, but also our carers, as well as our professional network of therapists, trainers, and placing authorities.
• We value all cultures, backgrounds, ethnic orientations, religious beliefs, and genders. There is no discrimination at our children’s residential care home. Everyone is family to us.

• We value and respect every child’s and young person’s wishes. If they are not comfortable engaging in a specific group activity, we respect it and get them engaged in other activates. If a child or young one has special needs, we take them into consideration and customise our services accordingly.
• We value the fact that every child/young person is unique, taking the time to understand their specific needs and strengths, and defining goals & outcomes accordingly to help them grow.
